Your data in this pilot

This page explains, in plain language, what we store when you tag, why, and how long we keep it. It is written for a small, time-limited trial. Draft for review. The final wording will be confirmed by Art UK.

A closed, time-limited prototype

This is an experimental prototype, not a finished service. It runs as a closed pilot for roughly six months so Art UK can test whether community tagging with AI suggestions works in practice. When the trial ends, the prototype is taken offline.

You do not need an account to take part. There is no login and no sign-up.

A device identifier on your browser

Because there is no login, we keep a single random identifier in your browser's local storage (named artuk-tagger-id) so the tool can tell your taps apart from other people's and not show you the same artwork twice. It is a random string. It does not contain your name, email, or anything you typed.

This identifier is persistent, so under UK GDPR it counts as an online identifier, a form of personal data, even though it is not tied to who you are. You can clear it at any time by clearing this site's data in your browser, or by using private or incognito browsing.

We also store a small assignment value so we can compare two versions of the tagging screen against each other (an A/B test). It is part of the same anonymous record.

What we store when you tag

When you approve, reject, or add a tag, we record:

  • · which artwork and tag you voted on, and whether you approved or rejected it;
  • · the time of the vote;
  • · your anonymous device identifier and which version of the screen you saw (the A/B assignment);
  • · any tags you type in yourself, as free text.

Please keep tags to what you see in the artwork. Because added tags are free text, they could in theory contain personal information, so do not type anyone's name, contact details, or other personal data into a tag. Submissions are screened and reviewed before any are kept.

Analytics without cookies

We measure basic usage (such as page views) with Cabin, a privacy-first analytics tool. Cabin does not use cookies and does not build a profile of you across other sites, so this site does not need a cookie consent banner. We use it only to see whether the pilot is being used.

What is shared with Art UK

The point of the pilot is to improve Art UK's catalogue. Tags that the community has verified are exported to Art UK so they can be added to the artwork records. The export is about the artwork and its tags. It is not a profile of you.

How long we keep it

We keep the tagging data only for the length of the trial plus a short wind-down period to analyse the results. After that, the underlying records (votes, timestamps, and device identifiers) are deleted and the prototype is decommissioned. The verified tags handed to Art UK live on inside Art UK's own catalogue under their own privacy terms.

Asking for your data to be deleted

You can ask us to delete the votes linked to your browser. The quickest way to remove the identifier locally is to clear this site's data in your browser. To have the server-side records removed, contact us with your device identifier (you can find it in your browser's local storage for this site) so we can locate and delete the matching votes.

You also have the usual UK GDPR rights, including access and erasure. Art UK is the data controller for this pilot. Requests and questions can be sent to the contact below.
